Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. ~Nelson Mandela
Kari Hughes - Co-founder

Kari has been working with women and children for over 25 years, both in public health and as a psychotherapist. She has traveled the world and seen the devastating effects of poverty first hand.

Motivated by a desire to be a force for positive change in the world and not being one to overthink huge life changing decisions, she decided to found a social enterprise focused on empowering women around the developing world.

She invited her good friend Shanan Bunzendahl Snyder to join the team and Buy The Change was born. It has been a labor of love every day since, even on the days when the task seems incredibly overwhelming.

She believes in the power of relationships and makes personal visits to meet Buy The Change partner artisans around the world. Visiting women, often in their homes, and witnessing the difference income makes is what keeps her going on this mission of love and hope.

Shanan Bunzendahl Snyder - Co-founder

The first planning meeting for Buy The Change took place on the patio at Plum Market in Ann Arbor, Michigan during the summer of 2011. Kari called Shanan and said "I have an idea on how we can make a difference for women around the world". Shanan said "I'm in" before she even knew any of the details. That is the kind of person Shanan is.

After being an essential part of founding Buy The Change, in 2015, Shanan moved on to pursue other interests which include a non-profit using rock climbing to help at-risk kids, climbing lots of rocks herself, working a full-time job and being a wife.

Shanan continues to serve as a board member for the Buy The Change Foundation and serves as  the webmaster for the Foundation website.
