Each year on June 20th the United Nations, United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and countless civic groups around the world celebrate World Refugee Day in order to draw the public's attention to the millions of refugees and Internally displaced persons worldwide who have been forced to flee their homes due to war, conflict, and persecution.


There are an estimated 45.2 million forcibly displaced people around the world and 15.4 million refugees, with an average of 23,000 men, women, and children per day forced to leave their homes to seek protection elsewhere, either within the borders of their own country or in other countries.


You may wonder what this has to do with you or even why we should care since there is so much need right here in our own backyard.


Imagine being the mother of a sick and hungry child and having to decide between risking your life staying in a conflict or leaving behind everything in search of safety.


Imagine surviving a devastating natural disaster, only to not have the resources available to rebuild your life or even


Imagine having to give up your way of life to start over - from scratch and often all alone - in a new country where you may not even speak the language, be familiar with the customs, and feel unwanted.


That’s life as a refugee. It isn’t a choice. It isn’t an answer. It is a temporary solution to a complicated problem. And it is reality for so many millions of people.
